DNA Paternity Test Kits Go On Sale Over the Counter For the First Time

Johannesburg, South Africa – November 19, 2009 – Clockwork Pharmacy will be the first retailer in the UK to sell DNA paternity test kits over the counter to the general public.

Initially they will go on sale on 17 November at its store at 380-400 Mare Street, London, E8 1HP, followed by its other 10 outlets in London and Kent.

The DNA Paternity Test Kits are produced by International Biosciences, the UK’s leading provider of commercial DNA services.

Clockwork Pharmacy, which is known in the retail pharmacy sector as a pioneer in providing new services to the public, believes the sale of over the counter paternity tests will become a standard product in high street chemists and has adopted their sale as part of its progressive approach to serving the public.

It is the only pharmacy group to offer walk in vaccination services along with a wide range of other specialist medical and consultancy facilities. It sees the selling of DNA paternity testing kits as an extension of its forward thinking policy of serving the public.

Test kits are purchased over the counter. They contain swabs to be used on the inside of the cheek. Once samples are taken they must be accompanied by a signed statement from an authorised adult before dispatch for testing at International Biosciences’ accredited laboratories. Test results will be received back by customers within five days of arrival at International Biosciences. The purchase cost of the test kit is £30 and the laboratory processing of the DNA samples is £119.

International Biosciences takes the responsibility of paternity testing very seriously, and has taken advice from all recognised religious groups, and organisations involved in family and child welfare. It provides a telephone counselling line manned by a qualified counsellor, plus it provides a wide range of other contact details for anyone thinking about purchasing a test kit.

Both Clockwork Pharmacy and International Biosciences believe they have adopted responsible practices in selling paternity test kits, and that in a free society there is a right to have DNA information relating to the historic behaviour of adults. DNA paternity testing is a reporting service for those who want to use it.
