DNA Testing for Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer affecting men and accounts for around a quarter of all newly diagnosed cancers in the UK. As women do not possess a prostate, which is a small gland located in the pelvis (between the penis and bladder), the disease only affects men and is more commonly found in those aged over 65 years. Symptoms of prostate cancer include the difficult or painful passing of urine, passing urine more often than usual or the presence of blood in urine or semen. However, these symptoms are also associated with an enlarged prostate, which is another common occurrence in the male anatomy. The symptoms of any condition affecting the prostate tend to be the same as most involve the abnormal growth of the gland, which applies pressure onto the surrounding organs.

Prostate cancer can take up to 15 years in many cases before it becomes terminal by spreading to other parts of the body – usually the bones – so it is a cancer that offers a reasonable chance of survival. Nevertheless, thousands of men die every year with prostate cancer, so early detection is important. Genetic predisposition DNA testing for prostate cancer has revealed that many sufferers of the disease have inherited certain gene alterations. Unfortunately, a genetic predisposition to prostate cancer is difficult to establish as researchers have discovered numerous gene alterations, which currently include BRCA1, BRCA2, CHEK2, NBS1 and ATM, can affect the development of prostate cancer. DNA testing prostate cancer has also revealed that up to 15% of cases can be attributed to genetic alterations.

They also fund research into the disease and work to achieve improvements in services and public awareness.
